2015 Club Captain’s report

As we finish the year and dwell on a successful Rugby World Cup by the All Blacks, we acknowledge what great rugby ambassadors and sports people we have in New Zealand.

The season still remains busy for the Barbarians, but the programme we support now generally stays similar from year to year. Our involvement from Fun Days in Ngataringa Bay and Paengaroa, Top 4, First XV rugby, NZ Barbarians Area Schools, NZ Barbarians Schools and middleweight rugby has again been admirable and this year finishing with the NZ Barbarians Schools side playing the NZ Schools side.

But the highlight for me was the NZ Maori playing the NZ Barbarians at Eden Park. It was great to be involved with the side and come back to the club with a victory. What a great group of players, coaches and staff we had assembled. The Baabaas jersey just brings the best out of players.

Funding and sponsorship for these activities still remains an issue and steps for next year’s programme will have to be addressed early in 2016.

The John Drake golf day once again was postponed, partly because of Rugby World Cup, but steps will be taken in 2016 to get the golf back on the calendar and well supported.

This year was the first chance I have had the opportunity to attend the Pat Walsh Memorial Bowls Day in Mangere and if any members want a great day of fun, food and camaraderie, this is the place to be.

To Dean Paddy’s team and their running of the club, which again has been fantastic, well done as we expect. Feedback always acknowledges the amazing asset we have in you and your team.

To all the management, committee and members who have contributed to the club this year, we thank you for your efforts and to our new members and committee welcome.

To our outgoing President ‘Beegee,’ we acknowledge not only your service to our club but to New Zealand rugby in general and we look forward to your continued support with the Barbarians next year.

To all members, don’t forget the Christmas party on Friday December 4 at 6pm and enjoy the festive break.
